The Olson 30 Speedy was dressed as a circus with skipper Dick Olsen the ring master trying to control his animal crew. Double Espresso had the Kauai Sailing Association crew dressed up as yachties with formal caps and even a drink in skipper Carl Andersson’s hand. Meanwhile the Ozone crew was all dressed in black with white Jason masks, some covered with fake blood. The course was E-E a short 2 miles inside the harbor in order to finish in time for the Halloween after dinner event in the clubhouse and before it gets too dark. The wind was a light 7-8 knots out of the East.
Double Espresso had the best start at the pin end on starboard tack. Speedy came in on port tack from the mole area and had to duck Double Espresso, but they were close. Meanwhile, Ozone’s skipper Chris Jordan made a lousy tack near the pin end and started off in last place...
After rounding the Kalapaki buoy the boats put up their spinnakers to go downwind under port pole. Double Espresso had some issues and they were passed by both Speedy and Ozone. The boats all rounded the G-11 buoy by the Coast Guard Station and headed back upwind to the Kalapaki buoy.
On the second downwind leg under spinnaker Speedy headed up towards the breakwater for boat speed. Ozone took the slower but more direct route to G-11and this paid off. As they approached the buoy Ozone was on the inside with rights and here they passed Speedy. And back upwind to the finish line it was Ozone taking line honors and first place with a time of 42:19. Speedy was second at 42:58 and Double Espresso took third with a time of 45:30.
This was the final race of the 2024 season as it gets dark so early now after work. And besides the boats need their annual maintenance with sanding, bottom paint, and more.
See you in February!
-Chris
