It was a light air day with winds out of the East at 8 knots. The larger headsails were up for the 2.91 mile course E-D-F. With about 45 seconds before the start Speedy and Ozone tacked simultaneously with Speedy to leeward taking control. And Double Espresso was messing with Ozone as well. Ozone had to go head to wind and flog their sails to slow down and avoid the other boats and then they had to dive way down to make it around the starting pin and this caused Ozone to be incredibly slow at the start. Bonjolea II had started about a quarter of the way down the starting line from the pin end and they had clear air and soon jumped out into the lead passing Speedy before rounding the Kalapaki buoy. And Ozone was just able to get inside overlap on Speedy at this buoy so they rounded in front of them here. The boats headed downwind under spinnaker using a port pole. After rounding the G-11 buoy downwind by the Coast Guard Station the boats headed back upwind for the second lap. Bonjolea II heading to the Kalapaki buoy appeared to have tacked too early in the minds of Speedy and Ozone who went in further towards the breakwater before tacking. But Bonjolea II got a lift and made it around easily and definitely gained while the Olson 30’s had over stood the mark and lost some distance.
The next mark was G-7 downwind where the boats gybe their spinnakers to head to G-11 by the Coast Guard Station. And the boat positions stayed the same. The 3rd and final lap again went upwind to the Kalapaki buoy but then it went to the G-7 buoy which is rarely used for the downwind mark. The boats then had a short upwind leg to the finish line.
And at the finish line it was Bonjolea II taking line honors and first place with a handicap time of 35:06. Ozone was 32 seconds behind them with a time of 35:38 and Double Espresso was third at 36:41. Speedy rounded out the fleet at 41:12.
For the 7 race Gene Wells Memorial Series there was one throwout of your worst score. Ozone took first place with 8 points, Bonjolea II was second with 11 points, and Double Espresso was third with 18 points. Speedy followed with 19 points.
